Good Jeans: Six Rules for Rocking Your Denim this Fall

1. If it is tie-dyed, buy it. Updated from its flower child history, this DIY-inspired trend is saturating the season's best offerings from Proenza Schouler to J. Brand.
2. Opt for darker washes like navy, indigo, and black. Deeper shades look dressed up and polished compared to more casual stonewashes and paler hues.
3. The straighter the leg, the better. Look for a silhouette similar to your classic Levi 501s. This shape is another extension of the fifties tendency--hourglass figures, cleavage, corsets and crimson lips--dominating this season.

4. Invest in a jean jacket lined with faux fur, flannel or sheepskin. In a sea of capes this is a more casual, and considerably cozier, way to warm up.
5. The classic denim shirt is still a standout staple this season. Roll up the sleeves and pair it with black skinny jeans and a boy's blazer for a sophisticated weekend look or tuck it into a calf-crazing circle skirt for a smart work outfit.
6. If you want try a denim skirt, choose a skinny pencil style in a darker shade. Finish it off with kitten heels, flat boots or some knee socks and a pair of chunky loafers to nod to fall's collegiate mood.
